The hashtag #solidarityisforwhitewomen started in a "moment of frustration" by Mikki Kendall as self-described male feminist Hugo Schwyzer targeted feminists of colour for standing in his way.

Schwyzer garnered media attention after having himself circumcised at age 37 in 2005 and then appeared as a guest on The Ricki Lake Show to favorably discuss the procedure done for medical reasons and its improvements to his sex life. Schwyzer became the subject of additional controversy when he admitted to sleeping with his female students, having sex with men and women, and attempting to kill himself and his ex-girlfriend while under the influence of narcotics in 1998.
